How Much Can I Borrow?

How much you can borrow depends less on your salary alone and more on your debt-to-income ratio — your total monthly debt payments divided by your gross monthly income. These pages estimate borrowing capacity for the main loan categories at a range of salaries, assuming you have no existing debts.

How to read these estimates: figures assume no existing debt payments and use representative rates and terms for each category. Real offers depend on your credit score, existing debts, employment history and the lender. They are a planning guide, not a pre-approval.

What actually limits how much you can borrow

  • Debt-to-income ratio. Most lenders cap total debt payments at 43-50% of gross monthly income. Existing debts reduce what is left for a new loan.
  • Credit score. A higher score lowers your rate, which raises how much a given payment can support.
  • Loan term. A longer term lowers the payment but stretches repayment, so it supports a larger loan at a higher total cost.
  • Collateral. Secured loans let lenders approve more because the asset reduces their risk.
